Oral presentation on “Towards an operational Climate Service for drought forecasting

An effective climate service must engage stakeholders and respond to the needs of end users. However, obstacles remain that limit the transition from climate information to operational application, particularly for seasonal forecasts, which face challenges such as low accuracy, non-stationarity, and spatio-temporal gaps between historical and forecast data. The Drought Observatory, through the Drought Scan system, proposes an innovative approach to address these issues by analyzing two case studies: the 2017 and 2022 agronomic seasons in the Po Valley, both marked by droughts that severely affected maize and rice cultivation. The objective is to demonstrate how the use of seasonal forecasts to estimate the probability of extreme drought can support more effective strategies for crop and water management.
