The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is a widely used monthly index to characterize different types of drought on a range of timescales, across regions with different climates. On short timescales, the SPI is closely related to soil moisture and affects agriculture; at longer timescales, the SPI is related to groundwater and reservoir storage.
